Providing help to Wirral sports people to achieve their sporting goals
Applications are now open.
The 2026 Bursary Awards will be presented at the awards evening on 25th November.
Applications close on October 31st 2026.
The Wirral Sports Forum’s bursary scheme provides direct financial support to young Wirral athletes working towards their sporting goals.
Bursaries can support kit and equipment, travel expenses, accommodation when competing away from home, competition costs, specialist coaching, coaching programmes and personal development for athletes advancing their sporting careers.
The scheme is open to all young athletes on the Wirral who are under 25 at the date of the application deadline. Applicants no longer need to be members of a club, league or association affiliated with the Wirral Sports Forum.
The bursary scheme is funded by the Wirral Sports Forum Foundation charitable wing, administered by GivingWorks, using profits from Forum events and direct donations.
Who can apply?
Any young athlete on the Wirral who is under 25 on the date of the application deadline.
What information do I need to provide?
Details of your sport, your position or ranking, why you need support, and how you intend to use the bursary.
Can I apply more than once?
Unfortunately, repeated applications for the same purpose will not be accepted.
How are bursaries awarded?
The bursary pool is limited, so not every application can be funded. All applications are carefully considered by the Sports Forum’s Bursary Committee, and recipients are chosen based on the merits of their application.
When will I hear if I’ve been successful?
Successful applicants will be notified ahead of the annual Awards Evening.
Lady Mayor of Wirral, Cherry Povall, was delighted to present bursary awards to local junior sports people last night, Tuesday 18th June 2024, at Birkenhead Town Hall.
Monies raised by the Wirral Sports Forum funded the bursaries. The Wirral Sports Forum exists to promote Wirral’s sporting success and, where possible, support Wirral’s developing sporting talent. Part of this contribution is to raise funds for the unique bursary award scheme.
The Forum annually announces to its members the opportunity of applying for a sports bursary that will provide financial help to young sports people across the borough to achieve their sporting goals.
This year a record number of 19 incredibly talented young athletes successfully applied for bursaries. The 8 sports represented include Athletics, Golf, Swimming, Gymnastics, Modern Pentathlon, Majorettes, Rugby and Archery.

Commenting on the awards Wirral Sports Forum Chair Ronan Kearney said “We wish all of them success in their individual and team events and look forward to hearing from them on how they all got on. The bursary awards are an exclusive benefit for our forum members. I would encourage all local sports clubs, leagues or associations to join the Wirral Sports Forum. Our fund raising primarily comes from the annual Wirral Sports Awards. This year’s event takes place on 22nd October 2024 at the Floral Pavilion and is celebrating its 60th anniversary. It’s Wirral’s largest multi sports awards ceremony so no local sports club, league or organisation would want to miss out. We will soon be receiving nominations under the different categories. Please keep an eye out in the local press and on social media for details on how to nominate under the various categories.
